Betsy Sheldon, archeologist and president of SITE Inc., the firm conducting the current study, said nothing major to support further investigation has yet been found, though the dig is not quite finished.
"We anticipate being here four more days, and then we'll begin the laboratory analysis," Sheldon said Thursday. So far, pieces of broken pottery and stone tools have been found during the digs.
The hospital secured a loan insured by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help in construction costs."Federally funded projects are mandated by the National Environmental Protection Act to do cultural resource studies," Sheldon said.
The hospital conducted a Phase I study, in which broken pottery and tools were found similar to those found so far in Phase II.Sheldon said unless there is a major find this week, it is unlikely a Phase III will be needed.

"To separate the cultural artifacts from the matrix," Sheldon said.
All of the artifacts found so far date to the Woodland Period, 1000 B.C. to 300 A.D., Sheldon said.
So far, nothing unusual has been uncovered.
"There's always that chance. We're always looking," Sheldon said."That's the excitement of it -- that you never know what you're going to find next."
Sheldon founded SITE 20 years ago.
