"Any project that is funded with federal dollars requires cultural resource management studies be completed," said Elisabeth Sheldon, president of SITE Inc., the company that will be sifting through the half-acre of the hospital site that held the pottery.

Summit has secured a loan insured by HUD to fund part of the construction of the hospital. The Phase I search was just completed, and the Phase II search will begin as soon as the state historic commission approved the plan.

Phase II should take about three to four weeks, Sheldon said.

Betsy Sheldon, archeologist and president of SITE Inc., the firm conducting the current study, said nothing major to support further investigation has yet been found, though the dig is not quite finished.

"We anticipate being here four more days, and then we'll begin the laboratory analysis," Sheldon said Thursday. So far, pieces of broken pottery and stone tools have been found during the digs.

The hospital secured a loan insured by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help in construction costs."Federally funded projects are mandated by the National Environmental Protection Act to do cultural resource studies," Sheldon said.

The hospital conducted a Phase I study, in which broken pottery and tools were found similar to those found so far in Phase II.Sheldon said unless there is a major find this week, it is unlikely a Phase III will be needed.

"To separate the cultural artifacts from the matrix," Sheldon said.

All of the artifacts found so far date to the Woodland Period, 1000 B.C. to 300 A.D., Sheldon said.

So far, nothing unusual has been uncovered.

"There's always that chance. We're always looking," Sheldon said."That's the excitement of it -- that you never know what you're going to find next."

Sheldon founded SITE 20 years ago.

Sheldon said, "this is probably 1000 years before tribes that were mentioned in history as Creek Indians. These people were hunters and gatherers."

While Dr. Sheldon and her crew have found history in the dirt, she said the site doesn't tell the whole story.

"It has limited potential for adding greatly to the knowledge of the area," Sheldon said.Still, she can't help but feel connected to the people who used the pottery she's finding.

"And perhaps you also feel, I hate to say it, but I 'feel their pain,' because these pots are easily broken. They make them, and then somehow they shatter, and they're gone."

But only for two thousand years or so, until someone, like Sheldon, goes looking for them.
