The final draft also identifies how local infrastructure can be changed to withstand natural disasters better.The plan helps in three crucial ways, Sheldon said: Preparing for and mitigating damage; making the county eligible for federal programs; and lowering the flood insurance premiums.

Project Engineer Adrienne Sheldon, of Greenhorne & O'Mara, Inc., presented the draft of the Flood Hazard Mitigation Plan and asked if any changes are required before the final draft.

Ms. Sheldon explained this would qualify the Township for not only mitigation monies, but also less costly flood insurance rates through the CRS program.She provided a brief overview of the Plan.The most significant changes from the previous draft are contained in Chapter 10.Ms. Sheldon asked the Board to review the Plan and provide comment to her by March 9.

"A majority of the county is in the 100-year flood plain," said Adrienne Sheldon of Greenhorne and O'Mara Inc., another consulting firm assisting with the plan.

"The city of Beaufort has nine critical facilities in the flood plain É Port Royal only has one," Sheldon said.

There also isn't a protection program in place for the county's historic structures.Sheldon said that could be a big problem and should be something the county's plan addresses.
