"The first thing we did was identify the county's natural hazards," said Adrienne Sheldon, an environmental engineer with Greenhorne & O'Mara, Inc., who helped county officials draft the county's Hazard Mitigation Plan, the document presented on Thursday."The goal is to help people become better prepared."
The plan took input from several county agencies and all its municipalities except for Yemassee.
The final draft also identifies how local infrastructure can be changed to withstand natural disasters better.The plan helps in three crucial ways, Sheldon said: Preparing for and mitigating damage; making the county eligible for federal programs; and lowering the flood insurance premiums.
