Karen Shelby, operations manager for the Greater Stockton Emergency Food Bank, said she was glad the president took a moment to encourage volunteerism.
"I think it's great; it's something that we did slip away from for a while, standing side by side with our brothers and sisters," Shelby said. "I think it's great that we are feeling more harmony right now, more patriotic than we were a year ago this date."
Shelby said the shelter, like those it serves, is facing particularly hard times now.
"We do have a serious shortage of people helping out," Shelby said. "And, unfortunately, the need for our services is just getting more and more by the day, it seems."
