The contest between Rockefeller and Sheffield marked a first in Arkansas politics because it involved a black Democratic nominee for a statewide office.

Sheffield, 56, emphasized his rearing in a working family, a childhood that was marred by tragedy and a military stint in Southeast Asia. He criticized Rockefeller, 54, for a life of ease and riches.
Rockefeller, who was recently listed as the second-wealthiest politician in the country with a worth of $1.2 billion, donates his $35,574 yearly salary to charity. He has said the post is known officially as a part-time job and said he's on call 24 hours a day. Rockefeller became lieutenant governor in a special election in 1996.
Rockefeller credited his strong lead Tuesday to his contention that Arkansans have come to know him. "In my first campaign, they said, ‘Well, he's not from here.' And in this one, they said, ‘He can't relate to the common man.'
