   Lansing physician Dr. Joseph Sheets has received Sparrow Health System's highest honor, the 2004 Sparrow Founders' Award.
   
   Sparrow Board vice chair Jonathan Raven presented Dr. Sheets with the award at Sparrow's annual Founders' Day Celebration March 18.

   Dr. Sheets, a resident of East Lansing, has served the mid-Michigan community for more than four decades as a physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology.He served as chair of Sparrow's Ob/Gyn Department, medical director of Physicians Health Plan of Mid-Michigan, a member of Sparrow's medical staff executive committee, and a member of the Sparrow Foundation board of directors.
   
   Dr. Sheets is credited with bringing fetal monitors to Sparrow Hospital, one of the first hospitals in Michigan to use them, and also for performing Sparrow's first laparoscopic surgical procedure in 1972.His influence helped establish Sparrow's Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Women's Pavilion.His career also includes more than 5,000 major surgeries and the delivery of more than 10,000 babies.
   
   Dr. Sheets has served as a mentor to many resident physicians.He created the ob-gyn residency program at Sparrow.In the past several years, he has worked tirelessly to create an endowment to support obstetric and gynecology programs at Sparrow.
