HOWLAND - John Sheets said being hired as the new Howland superintendent is a homecoming of sorts.
Sheets, 50, on Monday was given a three-year contract to replace John Rubesich, who is leaving July 31 to become superintendent of the Ashtabula County Educational Service Center.
...
It's a familiar scenario for Sheets, who replaced Rubesich as superintendent of Grand Valley School District in Orwell in 2000.
...
Sheets will be paid $98,000 annually, which includes a health and retirement benefits package, according to district Treasurer Tom Krispinsky.
...
I started my career in Badger, and I also taught in Hubbard before I was an administrator in LaBrae," Sheets said following Monday's Board of Education meeting.
Sheets is entering his 28th year in education, starting as a math teacher for Joseph Badger Local Schools in Kinsman and then teaching at Hubbard High School. He coached basketball in both districts for a total of 14 years. Before being tapped to head the Grand Valley district, he was assistant principal and athletic director at LaBrae High School for six years.
‘‘I would like to thank the board for its confidence in me, and I hope I can maintain the quality of the district and continue moving it forward. As you all know, good schools make good communities, and I look forward to working with the board to make that happen," Sheets said.
He was hired from among 21 applicants.
Sheets said Grand Valley passed a bond issue under his guidance and the district built a new K-12 complex with the help of the Ohio School Facilities Commission. Although Howland is planning a building project of its own, Sheets said he and the board first need to focus on passing two renewal levies that will be on November's ballot before seeking a bond issue next year for a new high school and other improvements. -

Howland Local Schools Board of Education Monday chose Grand Valley Local Schools Superintendent John Sheets to be the district's next superintendent.
...
Sheets, who has been at Grand Valley for seven years, will start his new duties Aug. 1.
...
The board then most likely will work with the Educational Service Center to find a replacement for Sheets.
...
Sheets makes his home in Trumbull County and before becoming superintendent at Grand Valley, he was assistant principal and athletic director at LaBrae High School in Leavittsburg.
"In some ways, it's like going home again. But Grand Valley has been good to me," he said.
