After 16 weeks of 5:45am track workouts and 10-20 mile runs on Saturdays, Sheets completed his second marathon this past December in Sacramento.
Starting at the Folsom Dam and ending at the State Capitol in Sacramento , the 23 rd Annual California International Marathon (CIM) was held on December 4th, 2005.Runner's World Magazine ranked the CIM in the top five marathons in the U.S. as a Boston Marathon Qualifier and recently listed it as one of the world's best small marathons!Posting a time of 3:13:56, Sheets qualified for The Boston Marathon with 1:04 to spare.
Elated to have achieved such a milestone by such a slim margin, Sheets enjoyed his moment, but quickly began thinking about the possibilities afoot and how to parlay his personal victory into helping others.Due to the tax questions he frequently encounters, Sheets is constantly reminded of those who continue to suffer from the devastating path of Hurricane Katrina.
"The most natural fit is to help those who suffered from the natural disasters this year, specifically Hurricane Katrina", states Sheets.
Sheets has taken it upon himself, with the help of his colleagues at BERGER/LEWIS, to draft a sponsorship form, similar to those of well known organizations, in order to earn pledge donations with each mile he runs in Boston. All of the proceeds will be presented to The Bush/Clinton Katrina Fund, for the benefit of those who continue to suffer in Katrina's wake.
The field of 20,000 athletes at this year's Boston Marathon hit the ground running on April 17, 2006 at noon; ironically, falling on the due-date for individual tax returns.
Permission to miss the final day of tax season wasn't difficult for Sheets, as his boss, mentor and firm Principal, Larry Kuechler, qualified and ran in the 100 th Boston Marathon ten years prior.
