Monica Shaw Promotes Involvement
...
A Chicago native who has lived on the Gold Coast for the last six years and in Chicago her entire life (except for a one year stay in Washington, DC, for graduate law school), Monica Shaw is one of DL21C's newer, yet more active, members.
...
Shaw is a corporate attorney with General Growth Properties, a large real estate investment trust that focuses on shopping mall development and management across the country. She has been with the firm for almost one year and "really enjoys" her job, says the graduate of Chicago-Kent Law School.Shaw also has a Master of Laws degree in securities and financial regulation from Georgetown University.
When asked to describe herself, she said that she feels she is a caring and loyal person who "really likes to laugh."Through her work, her volunteer activities, and her social life, she says she loves to meet people.Shaw joined DL21C last year while working on Ralph Martire's campaign.
Shaw joined DL21C because she wanted to get involved in politics and learn more about the political process."I believe that people can make a positive change but that they must get involved to do so," Shaw said. She would like to see DL21C focus its attention on getting young people involved and educate them about the issues affecting their lives."Through political action, young people discover that they can bring about change for the better," Shaw noted.Later this fall, she anticipates getting more deeply involved with Dan Hynes' election campaign.
Apart from DL21C, Shaw also is involved in the Committee for the Field Museum, on the Associate Board of the Boys and Girls Club, and is a member of the Executive Board of the Major Adams Academy, which helps inner-city youth. When not working to improve her community, she does enjoy spending lots of time with her family Sundays, trying new restaurants and traveling with friends-she's planning a trip to Italy this year.
DL21C is lucky to have such an active member, and looks forward to great ideas from Shaw in the coming months.
