    Steve Sewell, executive director of the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, said Birmingham's banking, utility, research and health care sectors are high-income job producers.

    Sewell said those are the industries that will help the area thrive in the knowledge-based global economy.

    "It ought to be extremely encouraging for everyone in Birmingham as you look at future economic growth," Sewell said. "That's where the U.S. economy is going.     Encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship will help improve the area's private sector employment growth, Sewell said. UAB will play a pivotal role in that effort, he said.
