Some schools seem to be holding their own, or showing a slight enrollment growth, and Bangor School Superintendent Dave Severson tried to explain how his school is bucking the trend.
The school has basically the same population it had 10 years ago and he reasoned that it's hard to lose track of any students in a population of just over 150.
"We have five times as many coming in on inter-district transfers as going out," he told the Enterprise-Record.
Reasons people bring their children to Bangor are a full-day kindergarten, a good place to work and a good place to learn, and a choice about which direction to drive.
"If you have to drive a distance, you might as well be picky about where you drive," he said.
Bangor offers a no-frills education, according to Severson's description, without as many electives as other campuses, and no gym.
"We practice basketball out in the cold wind," he said.
