After 15 years of experience, in 2002 Catherine Severson started Chicago-based Q Studio with two partners.Now she works with one partner, John Seegers, whom she considers her "work husband" and an important ingredient psychologically."You want to choose someone who balances out your skills and someone you can be honest with," she recommends.Severson is an interior designer, while her partner is an architect.
The dips in the economy and in a start-up's income can be one of the toughest challenges, an idea anybody starting out should realize right away."The first few years it takes time to establish yourself, so be willing to roll with the fluctuating income," says Severson.Although the creative control is the biggest reward to owning your own firm, creative problem solving isn't always at the top of the priority list."You need to be a Jack-of-all-trades.You will have to do everything including the accounting," she says.
