Adelaida Severson was chosen Thursday by the Gilbert Unified School District as the nominee to fill a vacancy on the governing board.

Severson, the president and co-owner of Bushtex Inc., was chosen among 13 applicants interested in a position Van Dunham will vacate Nov. 11.

"I am very humbled and honored," said Severson, 44, who has three sons in the district.

Severson is also an adjunct lecturer at Arizona State University, a co-founder of the Parent Legislative Network and vice president of the Gilbert Education Foundation Board.

She applied for last year's school board vacancy and also ran last year for a Gilbert school board seat.

Severson said she wants to be a part of the Gilbert school board because she feels she can be a "fresh voice."

"I want to offer whatever expertise I can to bring in the community at large," she said. "I'm hoping I can bring everyone from outside of the box in."

Severson has a doctorate in public administration from ASU, an international broadcast journalism master's degree from ASU, and bachelor's degrees in broadcast journalism and international relations from the University of Southern California.

Severson's three sons attend Ashland Ranch Elementary School.

Adelaida started her career as a journalist and reporter. She eventually fell into the satellite broadcast industry while working in Los Angeles as the Operations Manager for Transvision, Inc. (formerly Vision Accomplished, Inc.). Her experience in the satellite industry includes coordinating televised NFL Super Bowl Games, the Summer and Winter Olympics since 1990, the first live legal depositions via satellite from Puerto Rico, and countless events around the United States and the world. As the Director of Special Events at Arizona State University, she coordinated and facilitated all special events, friend-raisers and fundraisers for the President's Office. She was also instrumental in spearheading Senator Barry Goldwater's funeral and Princess Anne's visit to Phoenix, AZ. Adelaida has traveled to 34 countries, including Vietnam and Cuba and continues to consult on international communications strategies.

Adelaida graduated with a B.A. in Journalism and International Relations from the University of Southern California and received a Masters of Mass Communication and a Ph.D. in Public Administration from Arizona State University. Adelaida is fluent in Spanish and conversational Mandarin.

Her community involvement includes serving on the Board of Trustees for the Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine and Acupunture; St. Anne Little Flower Montessori School Advisory Board; Gilbert Leadership Board (graduated from Class XIII); Vice President of the ASU Asian Alumni Chapter, a member of the International Society of Satellite Professionals, the Asian American Journalists Association, and the American Society of Public Administrators.

Adelaida, who was born and raised in Hawaii, has worked internationally in the broadcast television industry for six years and later in higher education administration for 12 years.As the Director of Special Events at Arizona State University, she coordinated and facilitated all special events, friend-raisers and fundraisers for the President's Office.Currently, a homemaker, she works with her husband marketing and developing clients for their broadcast satellite communication business Bushtex, Inc.She holds a B.A. in Journalism and International Relations from the University of Southern California; a Masters of Mass Communication from Arizona State University, and recently received her Ph.D. in Public Administration from ASU.Her community involvement includes Gilbert Leadership, Vice President of the ASU Asian Alumni Chapter, ASU Student Foundation Advisory Board, and the American Society of Public Administrators.Adelaida has traveled to 50 countries and enjoys playing the piano, surfing, and spending time with her husband Barry and three boys (which include a set of twins, Brock and Swen).Her eldest son Lars and her twin boys attend St. Anne Little Flower Montessori.

Adelaida brings her experience of friend-raising and fundraising to the School Advisory Board.She currently is the chair of the Dinner and Auction Committee and serves on the Marketing and Development Committee.
