I needed some coaching and higher expectations. And after eight years of starting new companies, Kevin J. Seifert said he just wanted to see his family more. The ability to have any balance in life - whether it's hobbies, or spending time with your children before they're gone - is very hard in the start-up environment, said Mr. Seifert, 39, a vice president at Becton, Dickinson, a medical-device maker in Franklin Lakes, N.J. In fact, for much of the 20th century, self-employment in the United States was in decline, impelled in large part by the move from farm to factory. As recently as the years just before World War II, with an economy that included many more independent farmers than today's, about one in five workers had no boss. That share continued to drop steadily until the 1970's, when it essentially stabilized at roughly one in eight, as the growth of service industries like consulting and finance provided new chances for self-employment.Widespread layoffs among white-collar workers in the late 80's and early 90's also caused some people to set up their own businesses. That new generation of the self-employed offset the continued decline in small farming and seemed to mark the beginning of an age of entrepreneurship.
