New coach Jay Seider has the challenge of preparing a girls team with young talent, but without much experience.
Seider comes to Royal Palm Beach High School from Glades Central High School, where he coached a variety of sports, including the girls track and field team and also football.
Seider said there are a multitude of talented freshman on the team, but experience is a problem with only two seniors to guide the younger members of the team.
"We're starting from the ground up," Seider said.
The team's strength is in sprinting and team unity, he added, but the girls need to improve their shot-put and discus throwing skills.
"There's a lot of raw talent on the team," Seider said."You just have to get it out of them."
Seider added that he wants the team to be competitive in their conference, as well as finish in the top three in their district.A realistic goal for the team is having at least one member qualify for the state tournament, he said."I think that would be a big plus for the team," Seider said.
Seider pointed out freshman Jalissa Sutton as a young, gifted runner who participates in the 4x1 relay, 100-meter and 200-meter events.Sutton clocked a time of 12:15 in a 100-meter event earlier this year."She's got one of the better times in the area," he said.
