    Donald Robert "Bob" Segal, former publisher of The Brownsville Herald and longtime voice of The Herald's Don Pedro, died Tuesday in Orange County, Calif., after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.

    Segal was also former president and chief executive officer of Freedom Communications Inc., which owns The Herald, Mid-Valley Town-Crier in Weslaco, The Monitor in McAllen and Valley Morning Star in Harlingen, from 1979 to 1992.His career with Freedom began in 1945 as a reporter for The Orange County Register.He served in various capacities throughout his five decades with the company, including editor of the Appeal-Democrat in Marysville, Calif., executive editor of the Texas Rio Grande Valley Newspaper Group, and publisher of The Gaston Gazette in Gastonia, N.C.
