Born in 1952, Geminian Richard started collecting soul music whilst still at school in the late 60s.Amongst his earliest influences on radio were Tony Blackburn and Andy Peebles. In fact, it was through his regular guest spots on Andy"s "Soul Train" programme in the early 70s that Richard first got a taste for radio, having up to that point worked almost exclusively on the North West soul club circuit playing rare Northern Soul (at the legendary Wigan Casino All-nighters where he was resident DJ from 1974-1981) and Jazz Funk at clubs like "Angels" in Burnley.
After compiling an album of in-demand soul tracks for RCA in 1975 "Jumping at the Go-Go" made the Top 50 album chart Richard was offered a position as North West Promotions Executive for the label in 1976 and from that many contacts in radio were gained, resulting in a soul show being offered by Sheffield"s Radio Hallam in September 1980, where his long-running "Soul Sauce" programme was conceived. In 1983, Richard also started a similar show for Preston based Red Rose Radio, which meant regular cross-Pennine dashes every weekend but allowed him to spread the word about his beloved soul around the whole of the North West and South Yorkshire.
Having left RCA in 1981 to join a major wholesaler as Music & Video Buyer, Richard became more involved in the business than ever putting together projects for EMI, CBS and more for RCA (via the Grapevine label) and with Red Rose started his career as a promoter, running successful nights in conjunction with the station between 1984 and 1988.When Richard was approached to become a Director at the newly formed Manchester based soul station, Sunset Radio in 1989, he found it too difficult to resist and embarked on what he now describes as: 'A 3-year roller coaster ride of a learning curve!' Sunset made some great strides for the advancement of Black Music in the North West but sadly they ran out of money and ceased broadcasting in 1992.
Thankfully, Richard was not off-air for long as JAZZFM came calling in September 1994, where his programme Soul Sauce has become established as a MUST listen for soul fans in the region.Soul Sauce continues to entertain listeners every Sunday on Smooth FM.
Richard currently promotes soul events all over the North West, works as a consultant for Warner Music, Universal and EMI, putting together their Northern and Modern Soul compilation CDs, and runs his own Expansion label with partner Ralph Tee.Richard is married to (teenage sweetheart) Judith and they have one daughter, Carolyn.Richard is a committed soul music lover, with a collection spanning from 1964 right up to the year 2003.
His hobbies include watching Tottenham Hotspur Football Club!
