The auditors made six recommendations that "were no big surprises" because most deal with clarifying written policies for official procedures, explained Father Wendell H. Searles, vicar general for the Diocese of Burlington.

Diocesan officials are already implementing the recommendations, and Father Searles said he did "not anticipate any immediate problems" with that implementation.

Diocesan Vicar General, Reverend Wendell Searles, who chaired both task forces, announced that $1,000,000 realized from the recent sale of the former Camp St. Joseph will subsidize the new camping program.Another $350,000 will be reserved for capital improvements.Said Father Searles:

"We are delighted with the merger of these two fine camps, which will enable us to unite forces and finances in order to achieve maximum service to the Youth of Vermont."

Father Searles also announced that the future of the present Camp Tara property will be determined by the Diocesan Administrative Board.
    ...
Father Searles indicated that the merger of the two camps is one component of a larger plan for a Diocesan Center. He said:

"The mandate given to our task force at the beginning was to study and to recommend the consolidation of our three lakefront properties and our two camping programs at Malletts Bay, with a view to a better and broader use of our diocesan resources."

Father Searles said the first recommendation of the Task Force was to sell Camp Saint Joseph which was not being used for any diocesan ministry and on which property taxes were being paid. This was implemented and the proceeds will be used for the development of the newly consolidated camp and the development of the Diocesan Center.

The Task Force's second challenge was to find a way to effectively consolidate the two camping programs and, in doing so, to preserve the special ministry of Camp Tara to underprivileged children. These recommendations were accepted and plans are already underway for the 2004 camping season with a consolidated camp.Commented Father Searles: "The mission of Camp Tara will continue."
    ...
    Added Father Searles:

"Still another concern is the possibility of using a portion of diocesan properties to help meet housing needs, such as subsidized housing, eldercare facilities, etc. "

Most Reverend Kenneth A. Angell, Bishop of Burlington, expressed gratitude to Fr. Searles and the entire special Task Force, and praised their excellent work:

Father Wendell Searles of the Catholic Diocese of Burlington said the bishop traditionally gives mass at a church outside the Burlington area during the holiday, adding that his visit has as much to do with that tradition as it does with the fight to keep the church open.

"When the decision was made about discontinuing mass in Johnson, we told the congregation it would be opened for special occasions, and this is certainly one of those special occasions," Searles said."The bishop is very aware of what the church is going through, and he is sympathetic to that.Christmas is one of the special cases though."

St. John was shut down and the congregation urged to attend services elsewhere this fall after the diocese decided it could not staff the turn of the century facility. The diocese blamed the decision on a shortage of priests.
