"It's not just a thing to do at Christmas," Yerba Buena rink manager Paige Scott says."It's a great thing to do all year long."

That's always been true for the core crowd. The Yerba Buena rink is open 20 hours a day.The competitive figure skaters are training at 5:30 in the morning. The hockey leagues play until 1 a.m. Scott has a coffee skate for older skaters on Thursday mornings and 600 kids in the skating school.

It's not just a thing to do at Christmas time.

It might be even better now.

    Scott is sure it is.

"In the nonpeak holiday times," she says, "most of our daytime public sessions are four to five hours."
    ...
Paige Scott, who manages the Yerba Buena rink, remembers growing up in the City when there were five rinks in operation. Her mom was a performer in the Ice Follies at Winterland and she was on skates at 18 months.

It's different now. When Scott's rink opened in 1998 it broke a 20-year ice drought in San Francisco. The last of the old neighborhood rinks closed in the '70s.There are more diversions now.Life got busier."Kids have piano lessons, language classes, soccer, basketball, volleyball," Scott says.

But this rink is going strong.Scott says Yerba Buena has a loyal community, glad to have some ice to call their own.
