"No, no not at all," counters a surprised Liz Schweitzer, a member of St. John's pastoral team."That's not a discussion that's been had at all…and really the only people are allowed to use this building are St. John's groups."What other churches do, says Schweitzer, "…well that's their concern, but not here."

"Although we're going back and celebrating those 100 years of the past, we're also using that as a basis to look to the future," says Liz Schweitzer, mayor of East Lansing from 1989 to 1993.
    ...
"We're going to be making some tough choices," says Schweitzer."However we do have a major industry here-- the university-- and that's not going away."

MSU has always brought research and investment to the area, but with the state job market so grim, Schweitzer says the city needs to concentrate on reversing the "brain drain"-- students leaving the area right after graduation.

"We graduate thousands of people from MSU every year. These people are the future of the state economy and international economy. We have to figure out ways to keep them here," she says.

Former mayor Liz Schweitzer, who chairs the Centennial Commission, said the Web site will play a key role in spreading the word about the celebration.

"This is a new age in terms of how one communicates," she said."Given that we are a university community and just about everybody is on the Internet, this is going to be an important source of information."

Schweitzer said there is an interactive feature on the site that she encourages people to use.

"We are a community that is just filled with stories, and this is an opportunity for people to share their stories about their lives in East Lansing," she said."I hope a lot of people take advantage of that."

Schweitzer also encourages people to allow the use of photos of family, school or other activities they may have relating to the city.

"The history of the city is made up of a lot of ordinary experiences," she said."It's all about people.
