According to Steven Schwartz , vice chancellor of Sydney's Macquarie University, the answer is an emphatic Yes.
Last night I did something I rarely do: crossed the Sydney Harbour Bridge, northwards, to attend Professor Schwartz's inaugural annual oration, which announced its intentions in its title: Remoralising the university.
It was well worth the trek.
In a nutshell, Schwartz believes universities worldwide have abandoned their traditional role of taking boys and girls and moulding them into men and women of character, decent citizens who understand the old-fashioned concept of virtue.
