Martin Schwartz (no relation), director of the Island's SBDC, in partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration, advised the entrepreneurs on how to obtain financing, write a business plan and increase profitability.The expert counseling came at no charge.
"They helped me get financing, helped me deal with employees, helped me understand financial statements, helped me budget for next month and next year," Ms. Schwartz said.

"The business has grown a lot," Ms. Schwartz said.The company services electrical contractors, government agencies, including the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and industrial and retail customers.
"We're also the exclusive East Coast distributors of a ballast line, which controls fluorescent lighting, for B & L Technologies, based in Montreal, Canada," she said.
"The fact that we're a women-owned business has helped us grow, because many city, state, federal and Port Authority contracts set aside funds for women-owned businesses," she said.

In December 2001, after Wendie, who now lived in Philadelphia, had married and relocated to London, Ms. Schwartz bought out her sister's share and took on a new partner, Diane Searles.
