Martin D. Schwartz is Professor of Sociology at Ohio University.He was recently named the 2008 Fellow of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, and has received distinguished scholar awards from two different divisions of the American Society of Criminology: the Division on Women and Crime, and the Division on Critical Criminology.At Ohio University he has won a variety of awards, including University Graduate Professor of the Year and Best Arts and Sciences Professor (twice), while being the first social scientist to win the university's research achievement award, the title of Presidential Research Scholar.He has written or edited (often with Walter S. DeKeseredy) 21 editions of 12 books, more than 65 refereed journal articles and another 40 book chapters, government reports, and essays.After serving for two years recently as a visiting research fellow at the National Institute of Justice, U.S. Department of Justice, he is working on a book from the data he gathered on police investigation of sexual assault.He is also finishing up a book (with Walter DeKeseredy as lead author) for Rutgers University Press based on interviews with 42 Appalachian women who suffered sexual abuse while trying to leave a relationship.
Prof. Schwartz recently completed a five year term as co-editor of Criminal Justice: The International Journal of Policy and Practice, and has served on the editorial boards of 11 other professional journals, while doing manuscript reviews for some 65 journals.His Ph.D. is from the University of Kentucky, where he was awarded the Thomas R. Ford Distinguished Alumni Award in Sociology.
