One workshop, on "The Left's Litmus Test for Jews," examined how some quarters of the left seem to judge the credentials of Jewish groups or individuals by the stands they take on Israel, whether or not those views have any relevance to the work at hand, said Marty Schwartz, the session's leader.
In an interview after the conference, Schwartz, director of the Center for Social and Economic Justice of the Workmen's Circle/Arbeter Ring, said Israel often overshadows all other issues on the left, a situation that makes anyone with more nuanced views, including progressive Jewish groups, feel as if they are suspect.
