    David A. Schulte, Jr. has been a valued member of the correction community in New York City and State for more than forty years. He has served on the New York State Commission of Correction, the Correctional Association of New York, the American Correctional Association, the National Jail Association and the Federal Grand Jurors Association for the Southern District of New York. He is best known to this Department for his forty-one years of service as a member of the New York City Board of Correction, having been appointed to that position in 1960. Upon his retirement from the Board in 2001, Commissioner William J. Fraser appointed Mr. Schulte as Special Advisor to the Commissioner.

    Mr. Schulte's involvement in the field of crime prevention, correction services and civic organizations spans both national and international borders.

    In 1965, Mr. Schulte participated in the Third United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders. He was later appointed by President Gerald Ford as a representative of the United States to the United Nations program for the Prevention of Crime in 1976. Mr. Schulte has also served as Special Counsel to the United States Senate Sub-Committee on Juvenile Delinquency, President of the Urban League of Greater New York, and Chairman of the New York Board of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith. He has also been active on behalf of veterans, serving in various capacities with the New York Council of Jewish War Veterans, the New York County Catholic War Veterans, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization. These are but a few of the commitments Mr. Schulte has undertaken in his long and distinguished career in public service.

    The New York City Department of Correction is honored to have Mr. Schulte as a Special Advisor to the Commissioner and proud to call him a friend. Because of Mr. Schulte's depth of knowledge on correction matters and his many years of experience, he has provided this Department with invaluable guidance and counsel.
