"It would have been too expensive, not to mention the danger to the spectators," said Richard Schreiber, a principal designer for California-based Entertainment Design Corp., which won an Emmy Award for the opening ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
"This show won't be that big, but it will be a big show.Rather than going for big-budget special effects, we decided to take a more whimsical, fun and imaginative approach," he said, indicating as an example a bicycle with wings that was being wheeled into position for Wednesday night's dress rehearsal."Those will flap when the rider pedals it."
Stationed nearby was a 1,700-pound spaceship of aluminum, plywood and lighting instruments that Schreiber designed and Dayton resident Dan McLaughlin's firm Scenic Solutions constructed in a warehouse belonging to the Dayton Ballet.

Schreiber, who grew up in Springfield and got his start designing theater sets at Northwest High School, said his job was to make executive producer Jeremy Railton's vision and sketches for the production tangible.

Schreiber discounted rumors that one or more big-name celebrities will show up.
"There was talk for a while that President Bush (who will speak at Wright-Patterson on Friday) would make an appearance, but the Secret Service would need an army to secure this site," he said, indicating the numerous rooftops and towers that ring Fifth Third Field.
"We may have a few astronauts, though," he added while glancing up.
