  Dr. Lorilee Schoenbeck, president of the Vermont Association of Naturopathic Physicians, said about half of the naturopaths in the state have signed on, which requires an office inspection from the insurance carriers.
  
  When the law was passed the wording in the bill excluded Vermont Medicaid from covering the naturopathic physicians.
  
  The Legislature this year added a provision that requires Medicaid to provide coverage and doctors are in the process of updating their credentials to include the low income federal insurance program, which includes the Vermont Health Access Plan and Dr. Dynasaur.
  
  "It's been a little frustrating.We've had to jump through a few extra hoops," Schoenbeck said.
  
  Schoenbeck also said her number of patients has almost doubled since the new law went into effect.
  
  And she said some people who have been waiting for the insurance coverage are now seeking the medical care that they were putting off.
  
  "Patients are happy and they are getting their tests and screenings at appropriate times," she said.

  On October 1, 2007, a new law in the State of Vermont requires that insurance companies recognize naturopathic physicians and cover office visits, diagnostic testing and conventional pharmacy prescriptions (though not supplements).Actual coverage will go into effect with renewal of policies in 2008.A notice on the website of the Vermont Association of Naturopathic Physicians clarifies that the mandate includes not only insurers such as Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Cigna, but also Medicaid and the Vermont Health Access Plan.The decision followed a 4 year campaign.VANP president Lorilee Schoenbeck, ND, asserts that the bill marks the beginning of a new era for NDs in the state: "We are looking forward to contributing our wellness and prevention-oriented style of primary care to Vermont's health care delivery system."

  Lorilee Schoenbeck N.D. received her 5-year doctoral training at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, OR. She completed her pre-med at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and also holds a bachelor's degree in nutrition from Goddard College.
