Margie Schneider (schneiderm@who.int), who became the full-time coordinator of the ICIDH-2 Environmental Task Force in November 1999, reported on its activities. The Task force will have its literature review on the Web in early 2000 and an annotated bibliography published by September 2000. Policy papers on Environmental Factors will be drafted by September 2000 and submitted for publication after that. Field trials are being conducted both as part of the Beta 2 Field Trials as well as additional studies. The data from the Field Trials will be used in an analysis of the interaction between Environmental Factors and other disability factors. A complete draft classification of Environmental Factors is expected in October 2000.

Margie Schneider discussed DISTAB: Disability Tabulations. The overall aim of this effort is to recode existing survey data using ICIDH-2 Beta-2 codes and to link up with the UN DISTAT Guidelines.

The project has additional goals. It is creating tables that compare statistics from national disability surveys internationally. It is determining the extent to which data are comparable across different surveys. The project is determining the feasibility of recoding existing data into ICIDH-2 Beta-2 codes.

Schneider discussed how the process is working. She identified the countries and organizations involved in DISTAB. They include France, Canada, the USA, South Africa and the Netherlands. New Zealand and Norway are considering joining in the project. The National Center for Health Statistics, WHO, the UN Statistical Division, and the National Council on Disability are also participating.

To date, the project has compared the nature of data collected on five surveys and has looked at issues such as age cutoff for different questions, the range of questions, and whether there was an overall disability rating. It has provided an ICIDH-2 code for questions for each survey.
