   The actions of strong women in history inspired her, and Ms. Schneider is hoping to make some change of her own at the local level - as a member of the Santa Barbara City Council. She's the only woman running in a field of nine on the ballot seeking three seats in the Nov. 4 election. And while she didn't set out to be a role model, she realizes that as the only woman in the race that she is one, like it or not.

   Ms. Schneider, a 32-year-old human resources manager at Planned Parenthood, was born in New York City and grew up in Manhattan. Her parents divorced when she was a year old and while she visited her father often, she was raised by her mother.
   
   Tap dancing, pottery classes, piano and violin lessons helped shape her. "I loved growing up in Manhattan," she said, recalling fondly how she would also visit Central Park.
