1. Risdon hopes trend continues

It's a move that immediately helps the bottom line, said Gary Schneider, an analyst at Bear, Stearns & Co.
"There's no increase in costs," Schneider said. "That should flow right through to profitability."
Crown has also sold off non-core businesses, raising more than $210 million to pay down debt.
...
Schneider, of Bear Stearns, agrees.
One possible scenario could involve selling off specialty can or aerosol businesses, leaving the company as primarily a manufacturer of metal food and beverage cans.
"This is just one option," said Schneider, who has never owned Crown shares.
He said Crown also could look to concentrate in particular geographic areas, possibly selling off operations in Asia or Latin America, as it did in Africa.
"They have options because they have quality assets," he said. "If they can generate enough cash from a positive turnaround in fundamentals, that obviously reduces the need to sell assets."
Schneider warns, however, there remain issues of concern.
Debt is high and Crown's stock is volatile, he said. For example, after briefly dropping below $1 in December, Crown shares climbed to a 52-week-high in April $12.25, before sliding again to $4.80 Friday.
"For the foreseeable future, a nimble trader, both long and short, can possibly make money in this stock," he said.
"For the long-term, serious investor, there are 10, 11 companies in the packaging industry one could look at. It's fraught with danger when you have a company that has almost $5 billion in debt."

Here are the details on Analyst Gary Schneider's Stock Pick for today:
Regardless of the current market situation, someone will always be trying to sell investors on one stock or another. Thus, it is refreshing to find an analyst that is honest enough to tell investors that all the stocks he currently covers are fairly valued and doesn't recommend any additional purchases at this time.
...
Gary Schneider, 5-Star analyst from Bear Stearns Company is just such an analyst. In 2001 while many sectors struggled, his containers sector was enjoying a modest bull market and Gary's picks returned +76% for the year. Considering the S&P 500 was negative for the year, this was a remarkable achievement.
AptarGroup Inc. (NYSE: ATR - News) manufactures, designs and sells consumer product dispensing systems for the personal care, fragrance/cosmetic, pharmaceutical, household and food/beverage markets.
BWAY Corp. (NYSE: BY - News) is a holding company whose principal subsidiaries manufactures and distributes metal containers and provides materials center services in the United States and Canada.
...
When asked what might bring these companies back on his radar, Gary pointed to a few key catalysts:
1. Someone has to break the current pattern where a purchaser of a
container company pays more than 6x-8x EBITDA. Recently, IVEX
Packaging (NYSE: IXX - News) was approved to be acquired by Alcoa Inc.
...
This may have some investors willing to pay any price to own them, but Schneider warns against chasing defensive stocks like they were technology. His method has been very profitable and might serve as a guide to any investor willing to be patient and diligent.

For example, Kodak is the major force in analog film and related products, notes analyst Gary Schneider of Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc., New York. Schneider estimates Kodak film market dominance at 70% in the U.S. and notes that it has a very big piece of the business in Europe. He also observes that the company continues to successfully expand its traditional film business in emerging countries such as China.
