Guard promotes Schmitz
Joseph L. Schmitz, son-in-law of David and Kathy Batty, of Oak Forest, was promoted Dec. 13 to the rank of first lieutenant as a Missouri Army National Guardsman.

Schmitz enlisted in 2001 as a combat medic with B Company, 1st Battalion, 128th Field Artillery Brigade. After completing his combat medic training, Schmitz joined the Truman State University Reserve Officer Training Corps program as a Simultaneous Membership Program cadet. Upon receiving his B.S. in agriculture in 2003, he also received his commission as a National Guard officer.
