Schmidt is a relief coordinator for Martin Interagency Network for Disaster, a group that includes more than two dozen church groups, nonprofits and local government agencies trying to fill in those cracks.

Pastor Susan Schmidt, the church's director of missions, said it was a good thing so many churches provide meals.

"It allows people to have a meal every night of the week," she said.

About 200 volunteers showed up on Thursday to serve the meal, said Pastor Susan Schmidt, the church's director of missions.

The church has been hosting the dinner for about 17 years, and it gets bigger every year, she said.
