Scott Schmidt, used-vehicle manager at Lou LaRiche Chevrolet in Plymouth, Mich., said he has sold a "couple" of vehicles on SmartAuction Direct, but has not purchased a vehicle using SmartAuction Direct. "If I have a 60- or 90-day vehicle on the lot that I have to move, I prefer to take the loss with a retail customer than to wholesale the vehicle," Schmidt said. "If you retail the vehicle you might get that money back in service, and you get the customer goodwill, even if it's family or a friend that buys the vehicle. You also have the financing and back-end opportunities that aren't there if you wholesale the vehicle." Schmidt, who's been selling cars for more than 15 years, said he regularly uses GM SmartAuction, and it's his "best source" of two- to three-year-old vehicles. One of the main reasons he's not purchased a vehicle directly from another dealer is he doesn't want to enable a competitor. "I'm not a big fan of helping a competitor get out from under his problems," he said. "I can help him and myself by keeping the market moving by retailing on my own lot. "If he couldn't retail the car, what makes me think that I'm smarter than he is." Schmidt said the service does have its bright spots in that there are no no-sale fees and he has five shots at moving the vehicle for one price. "If I take that car to auction and it doesn't sell, I have one shot and I have to bring the vehicle back to my store," Schmidt said. He added if he has to take the car to auction and take a loss, not only does the loss come out of his sales commission structure, but also added to that is the transportation costs, auction fees and any other incidental costs. Sometimes, he said, it may make more sense to move the car through a service like SmartAuction Direct.
