Lori Schmidt, the American Cancer Society's community development director assigned to St. Clair County, said each participant is encouraged to raise at least $100, through donations and fund-raisers.
During the event, teams sell luminaries, which are used to light the track at night.
Last year, about 900 St. Clair County residents walked, raising more than $161,000.
According to Schmidt, 20 relay events will be going on that weekend across Michigan and Indiana.Among them will be a relay in Richmond, which will be May 17 and 18 at Richmond High School, 35320 Division St.
The American Cancer Society sponsors more than 200 Relay For Life events nationwide.
It's not too late to get a team together.

"We've had them join the day of the event," Schmidt said.
She also stressed there are ways to help without walking, from making a donation to simply attending the event.
"Come to the victory lap and cheer the survivors on," she said.
