The students also donned firefighter gear, climbed aboard firetrucks and talked with firefighters they have come to know well, said Lori Schmidt, public education officer for the Scottsdale Fire Department.

Wednesday's activities were a follow-up to the previous week, when the department came to the school to talk about safety steps and protection.

"This is one of the cool things that we can do to complement class lessons and actually put them into practice for the children," Schmidt said. "Our guys are getting a kick out of it, and the kids are really finding someone that they can connect with. They become mentors and somebody to look up to."

The fire department has already planned similar activities at two more elementary schools in Scottsdale and hopes to reach all 22 by the end of the school year, Schmidt said.

Lori Schmidt of the Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona said that there has been an unusually high number of child drownings across the country this year, and that it's not a cultural or socioeconomic issue. "Always treat your kids as if they have had no swim classes," she said. On StarNet: Go to azstarnet.com/pdf for a PDF with instructions on making your pool area safer.

"What price do you put on your child's safety," questioned Lori Schmidt, President of the Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona. She is an expert in doggie door hazards in Maricopa County and teaches parents and kids the importance of knowing how to swim and CPR and stresses supervision is not enough.

"So you have to have the additional layers of protection. Put your barriers in place. That means putting you pool fence up making sure they don't have access to that. Putting door alarms on your doors and that can mean putting an alarm on you doggie door as well," Schmidt warned.

But the child car seat installations and inspections are the most important feature the fire department will offer during the event, Schmidt said.

About 85 percent of child car seats are installed incorrectly, according to national statistics, Schmidt said.

The Scottsdale Fire Department installs about 60 to 80 car seats per month by appointment, and Saturday will be a good opportunity to have it done without having to schedule one, Schmidt said.

"It's very important to make sure your child is strapped in their car safety seat," Schmidt said.
