"There is no designated space in the community for (teens) to go to express themselves and get involved in activities not associated with those destructive decisions," said Andrew Schantz, who has served as chairman of the Saline Youth Council for the past two years. "Why not create a place where teens can go to have fun, socialize with others, participate in activities and relax right here in Saline?"

A teen center, Schantz said, would fill that void in the community.

The idea of a teen center has been considered for many years, but under Schantz's leadership, the council has seen the most progress in finally making it a reality.
    ...
"One idea that we have talked about recently is a campaign called Five for the Fifth Corner, where we plan on asking all families in the Saline School District to make a $5 (donation) or more if they'd like to the teen center," Schantz said.

Not only would the fundraising campaign bring in needed funding, Schantz says, but also give the community a feeling of ownership in the center.

The Saline Youth Council plans to apply for tax-exempt status for the teen center. But, until then, it will fall under the 501(c)(3) umbrella of the Coalition for a Quality Community, allowing the center to accept tax-deductible donations.

Despite the financial hurdles, Schantz is hopeful that a teen center will finally take root in the community.

"We want to empower teens with the knowledge and skills to apply for local jobs and provide a convenient way for employers to recruit employees," Andrew Schantz, Saline Youth Council chairman, said in a news release.

There are many teens looking for a part-time or seasonal job, but just don't know how to apply or what to expect in an interview, Schantz said.

    Schantz named Youth of Year
    ...
Andrew Schantz, the 2008 Saline Youth of the Year, finds inspiration from the chaos, chatter and boisterous banter of a good brainstorming session. No brooding for this boy.

Schantz is a young man full of both innovative ideas and ambitious action, the rare combination that often propels men to the top of the game.Quickly.

Since first being nominated as Youth of the Year as a middle school student, Schantz has continued to amaze his peers, impress his mentors and leave his mark on his school, as well as the entire community.

"He can be described as a dynamic, gregarious, fun-loving, ambitious, dedicated, smart, engaging, sleep-deprived and practically-perfect young man," wrote Saline Parks and Recreation Director Carla Scruggs, who nominated Schantz this year on behalf of her department.
    ...
"Andrew is a great communicator, he keeps everyone informed, sends messages of encouragement and congratulations. You should see him run a Saline Youth Council meeting!"

Schantz, a junior at Saline High School, has been the chairman of the Saline Youth Council for two years, and has initiated "pSYChed," mentorship program between high school and middle school students. He was instrumental in the successful Dress for Less Sale in which donated Homecoming and prom dresses were sold to benefit charity.

In addition, he is spearheading an effort to build a teen center in Saline and has planned a teen job fair at the Saline Recreation Center this month.

He also has held leadership positions in the Saline chapter of Family, Career, Community Leaders of America and currently sits on the organization's State Executive Council. At this year's national leadership conference, he'll run for president of FCCLA, overseeing a membership of more than 250,000 youth.

If elected, he would hand over the reins of some of his local commitments.

"That won't be easy," he said."But it would be a huge honor to be in a position where I could inspire others to become leaders in their own communities."

Schantz believes that it's never too early for students to learn they can make a difference in their own world.Four years ago, he started a two-week-long summer day camp for kids in second through eighth grades, with his teammates from Destination Imagination. He taught campers the creative problem solving strategies he used during Destination Imagination competitions.

"Saline has given him many opportunities, and he wants to give the same or better opportunities to younger children," wrote Shantz's peer and council colleague, Dhanashree Patel, in her nominating letter.

Clearly, that's a priority for Schantz. He is a musician with the Saline Fiddlers, and a member of National Honor Society, Link Crew and Michigan Teenage Republicans.

As Andrew Schantz, Saline Youth Council chairman, said: "We want to pack the house."

Invitations have been sent to school administrators, downtown merchants, residents, elementary, middle and high school students, parents, Parent-Teacher Organization members and city staff.

"We want support and comments from the entire community to figure out how to make this happen," Schantz said.

Andrew Schantz, a senior at Saline High School, joined millions of Americans at the historical inauguration of President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C., Jan. 20.
    ...
Schantz is a Family, Career and Community Leaders of America national officer, one of 10 national officers attending a leadership training and business development meeting at FCCLA's headquarters in Reston, Va. Attending the Presidential Inauguration to represent the organization was an honor and privilege of being a national leader, he said.

Schantz said the inauguration was an experience he will never forget.

"Gathering together with millions of others to welcome President Obama into office was a powerful experience, despite the three-plus hour commute for both entering and exiting the district," he said.

All 10 national officers were elected to the organization's National Executive Council by their peers at the 2008 National Leadership Meeting attended by more than 5,000 youth and adults in Orlando, Fla.
