Sunset native Lincoln Savoie was inducted as the commander of the Veteran of Foreign Wars of Louisiana Sunday morning in the Lafayette Hilton Hotel at the annual VFW convention.

"Our freedoms were paid for with 1.4 million lives over the last 226 years," Savoie said Friday."Being elected state commander is after a long process of serving committee chairs and posts absolutely an honor.It also means I am in a better position to fight for the benefits of the veterans."

He says his attitude will be: No Veteran Left Behind.

"No veteran should have to wait up to 18 months for an appointment at any VA hospital, every veteran should get the maximum benefits he or she was promised," Savoie said.He also said he wants to see more federal money spent on Veterans Administration hospitals and he wants a cabinet seat in the governor's office for veterans affairs.

Savoie served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1978, serving in the Korean and the Viet Nam conflicts as a criminal investigator and rising to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer before his retirement in 1978.

His last assignment was as the personal security officer for Gen.

"We like the legislature but we get something done," Savoie said.

Larry Rivers, a Virginia attorney who is a past national commander of the VFW, swore in Savoie as Louisiana commander.
