They are Eric and Laurel Savoie (pronounced Sa-voy) of Russellville. They graduated from Russellville High School together in 2000; they have been a couple since "the summer of '98," said Laurel. Laurel and Eric are another example of non-traditional students, although they started Tech as traditional students.Their plans for the future are simple and clear: she wants to attend Winthrop College in South Carolina to pursue graduate studies in school psychology and he hopes to open his own martial arts studio.Eric is currently a second-degree brown belt in taekwondo and is very serious about his art. Laurel is an avid photographer in her spare time (well, what little she has); she gave up playing the flute for it.She currently works on campus in the Tech News Bureau, is the Psychology Fellow, and works for the Arka Tech campus newspaper and the Agricola yearbook.Eric works in the campus library at the circulation desk, something he can do if they move to South Carolina - and by attending Winthrop University with his wife, he can pursue his own dream. "I checked the Internet and found that there is a studio within the campus that shares the same philosophy that I do" of emphasizing the more mental aspects of martial arts, said Eric. Both came to Tech with academic scholarships, and Laurel also landed Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship. She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma (an honors program based on grade point average) and is also a member of Psi Chi, a psychology/sociology club that is new to the campus. Eric, however, hit a glitch in the scholarship road.He came to Tech with a full scholarship that covered his classes, room and board but he left himself without a cushion in his course load.

Meanwhile, Laurel was rushing sororities - sort of.She was invited by a friend to go meet some people at the top floor of her dorm, Caraway Hall, and thought "why not?"It didn't take her long to figure out
what was going on and she politely said "thanks, but no thanks." "I have nothing against sororities or anything of the sort; it just wasn't something I was interested in," says Laurel. The Savoies enjoy a simple domesticity; in fact, Eric does a lot of the cooking for their small family.Eric makes a dish using chicken, tomatoes and several Indian spices that can sear the taste buds if one isn't careful; add to that a creamy spinach and cheese concoction and tortilla shells and you have a creation to remember. "He can do things with spices that I just can't," said Laurel. So has this made Eric want to pursue a hospitality degree?Nope - he just likes to have fun in the kitchen creating things. Like with any couple, Eric and Laurel enjoy each other's company and they spend time watching movies or playing video games and watching Pitten and Pebble run around dodging window treatments and racing down the hall.
