   Jerome Santowski of Broan-NuTone Group, Inc. As president and CEO of Broan-NuTone Group, Inc., and President of the Broan, Aubrey, and Rangaire brands, Jerry Santowski is responsible for providing the vision, strategic planning, leadership, and management of the Broan Group. But he could be cleaning teeth. His mother wanted him to go into dentistry because his uncle was a successful dentist. He entered a Pre-Dentistry program at Loyola University in Chicago, in 1954, but quickly decided it wasn't for him. "I faint at the sight of blood," he says, "I had to find another career." From Northwestern University (Evanston, IL), he received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Major Industrial Management in 1967. He honed his skills from Columbia University's (New York, NY) Executive Management Program in 1981. He began his career 43-yr ago on the shop floor as a quality control inspector, quality engineer, then production foreman in the electronics industry at Western Electric Company and Warwick Electronics Co.
   
   After 2 years he joined Admiral Corporation (Chicago, IL), as a product manager for audio products. Three years later he moved to Bell & Howell Corporation, where, as Group senior product manager, he developed and implemented a successful new paradigm for the movie projection business. In 1979 he went to Ray-O-Vac Corporation as vice president of marketing and sales for its Micro Power Division in Madison, WI. In 1983 he joined Broan Mfg. Co. in Hartford, WI, as senior vice president of marketing and sales. His strategic plans brought significant growth and market share to the company, leading to his appointment as president and CEO in 1989. At this point he formed the Broan Group, integrating several Nortek companies while pursuing acquisitions which fit the strategic plan. In 1998, the company acquired NuTone of Cincinnati, OH, a major competitor.
   
   He was then named president and CEO of the Broan-NuTone Group, Inc. He describes his management style as a mixture of both the X and Y styles. "I have a passion for the consumer and our customer and I try to convey this passion at every opportunity, from our mission statement to our operating philosophy. He believes he's seen as very creative, a visionary, and a strategist. "I am a passionate leader constantly coaching, teaching, and training how to approach opportunities or issues from the broader strategic perspective before we begin acting on a tactical basis." At the same time, he says he's a disciplinarian in bringing people to focus on strategies and has low tolerance for schemes that are not well thought out. "My standards are high," he says. "Some might say too high.
