That Christmas , Dan Santow , a former Oprah Winfrey Show producer ( and a former staff writer for this magazine ) , wrote an article for Redbook magazine detailing the largess of Oprah's Christmas parties and the magnificent presents Oprah and her producers exchanged for the holidays.The story was rich in inside detail , revealing the contents of e-mails , conference room meetings , and the Harpo culture–the real first look behind the curtains at Harpo.
Soon after , employees were expected to sign lifetime confidentiality agreements , which became known by some inside Harpo as the Santow clause , in reference to the ex-producer. ( Employees , the agreement states , are obligated to keep confidential and never disclose , use , misappropriate , or confirm or deny the veracity of any statement or comment concerning Oprah or Harpo.

I understand her point , says Dan Santow , the former producer.Within a few days of leaving Harpo , I started getting calls from tabloids like the Enquirer asking if I'd write about my experience.The Enquirer wanted me to fly to Florida and write the story there , which made me nervous because it implied I wouldn't have control , that they'd really be writing the story.This was within a day or two of my leaving.It was unbelievable..
As to the control of her image , experts say , Oprah's case is nearly unique among celebrities.
