"Part of the requirement of the grant was building community partnerships and getting the kids to recognize the connection with economic success and job success," said Mary Jo Santoro, principal and assistant superintendent at Greater Lowell.

As part of the program, students attend MCAS-tutoring classes four days a week after school at the Boys & Girls Club in Lowell. The rest of the week, they work at jobs ranging form the Lowell Chamber of Commerce to the Mambo Grille to D'Youville Manor.

Of the 42 students who participated in the program last summer, 30 have since passed the MCAS."Good stats for a first-time program," said Santoro.

"Using a progressive approach to discipline should guide students to make better choices," said Mary Jo Santoro, assistant superintendent and principal of GLTHS.

Under the new plan, a uniform list of rules will be posted in each classroom. The list will outline the rewards students will receive for good behavior and the punishments for disobedience.

"For positive behavior, a student might get a free pass from homework for one night, or whatever the teacher deems appropriate for their own classroom," said Santoro.

The consequences for bad behavior will be minor for a first offense, then grow in severity with each subsequent violation.

"Kind of a three-strikes-you're-out rule," said Santoro.

The school will pay Simmons Associates $2,000 for its initial presentation on Aug. 28.The total cost for its services will vary, depending on how much technical assistance the school contracts the firm to provide during the year.It is currently under contract for two more sessions, bringing the price tag to $6,000.

According to Santoro, the new disciplinary system does not mean the school has a great deal of students with behavioral problems.

"We have a very safe school," said Santoro.

"Whenever you change the structure of an exam, especially one that's been around for so long ... you're going to get a change in scores because kids have to adapt," said Mary Jo Santoro, assistant superintendent and principal at GLTHS.

She said the addition of the writing test balances the SAT, which had primarily consisted of multiple-choice questions until 2006.Still, it's possible that some students are reaching the point of too much testing.

"Kids do get tired when they're sitting for hours taking a test," Santoro said.
