"Using a progressive approach to discipline should guide students to make better choices," said Mary Jo Santoro, assistant superintendent and principal of GLTHS.
Under the new plan, a uniform list of rules will be posted in each classroom. The list will outline the rewards students will receive for good behavior and the punishments for disobedience.
"For positive behavior, a student might get a free pass from homework for one night, or whatever the teacher deems appropriate for their own classroom," said Santoro.
The consequences for bad behavior will be minor for a first offense, then grow in severity with each subsequent violation.
"Kind of a three-strikes-you're-out rule," said Santoro.
The school will pay Simmons Associates $2,000 for its initial presentation on Aug. 28.The total cost for its services will vary, depending on how much technical assistance the school contracts the firm to provide during the year.It is currently under contract for two more sessions, bringing the price tag to $6,000.
According to Santoro, the new disciplinary system does not mean the school has a great deal of students with behavioral problems.
"We have a very safe school," said Santoro.
