    IRONWOOD -- Shirley Martinson Carpenedo, of Bessemer, and Kathy Santini, of Hurley, are two new real estate agents affiliated with Silver Properties in Ironwood.

    Santini has worked as community liaison and volunteer coordinator for the Hurley School District, director of volunteer services for Grand View Health System, owner/operator of a retail and wholesale business and proprietor of "A Gift of Time."

    She currently serves several boards of directors: the Memorial Medical Center in Ashland, Wis., Highline Corporation, Hurley Education Foundation and Arts for Range Children Inc.

    Santini is a member of the Ironwood-Hurley Rotary Club, Ironwood Area Ambassadors, Hurley School District Community Advisory Council, Iron County Community Health Improvement Project, Range Volunteer Manager's League and is a recipient of the prestigious ATHENA Award.

    In a recently released survey of area youth, "only 18 percent felt they were valued by their community," said Kathy Santini, community liaison at Hurley K-12 School and a member of the Volunteer Managers League.

    Santini said a lot of students volunteer at church or as tutors for younger students.Outside those familiar walls, "people don't know where to go, who to call, how to connect" to volunteer, she said.

    Encouraging volunteerism fits in with Hurley School's strategic plan to have 80 percent of middle and high school students taking part in community service by 2008, Santini said.
