BENNINGTON , For more than 35 years in various capacities, Salvatore Santarcangelo served his neighbors, earning him the moniker The Grandfather of Bennington. Monday, Bennington's beloved grandfather passed away. He was 87.
Santarcangelo, better known as Sal, or sometimes "the mayor," started his career in public service at the age of 26, when he became a Bennington firefighter, a role he held for the next quarter of a century. It was just the beginning of a life in public service so extensive that the Vermont Legislature honored him with a resolution in 2004, the same year he celebrated 60 years of marriage to his wife, Ethel.
The resolution, presented by five local lawmakers, cited everything from Santarcangelo's duty with the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II to his work with local high school students.
...
In 1961 Santarcangelo chaired the Bennington Bicentennial committee and later served as trustee, police commissioner and road commissioner for Old Bennington. In Bennington, Santarcangelo was a lister and sat on the Water Board. He was also the only man to serve as village president for both Bennington and Old Bennington.
When Bennington Town Clerk Timothy R. Corcoran was about 8 years old, he delivered newspapers to Santarcangelo, he said. Years later they served together on the Bennington Select Board. Santarcangelo held his seat until he was 84 years old.
...
Corcoran recalled an incident in which Santarcangelo, who sold fences and fuel oil for a living, bid for a town fencing project while on the Select Board.
...
Though Santarcangelo offered to do the project at cost, some felt it was a conflict of interest, said Corcoran.
...
But controversy never fazed Santarcangelo.
...
Corcoran said Santarcangelo possessed a wealth of knowledge about any number of subjects.
...
A self-made man, Santarcangelo had an appraiser's license and a real estate license, and he dabbled in a variety of businesses, including used cars.
Santarcangelo was passionate about promoting both the Bennington Bypass and downtown Bennington, said Corcoran.
...
Both on and off boards, Santarcangelo supported youth programs.
Many Mount Anthony Union High School students were introduced to the New York Yankee-baseball-cap-wearing Santarcangelo through the Rotary Interact program, a leadership organization he established. -
