Mr. Santarcangelo was a World War II U.S. Army Air Force veteran, serving as an airplane and engine mechanic.He attained the rank of corporal at the time of his discharge.
He was married to Ethel Pfalzgraf in Cohoes on Nov. 10, 1944.
In Cohoes, he owned and operated Congress Garage.In Bennington, he began working for Champlain Oil Co.He later established Ideal Fuels and Ideal Fence Co. and operated the company for over 46 years, retiring in 2004.
Mr. Santarcangelo was a volunteer firefighter with the Bennington Fire Department, serving with the Hook and Ladder Co. for 25 years.His elected office positions include chairman of the Bennington Bicentennial in 1961; the only person to have served as president of the villages of Bennington and Old Bennington; a Vermont State Senator from 1966 to 1968; Bennington town lister for seven years and water board for six years, five of those years as chairman; trustee, president, police commissioner and road commissioner of Old Bennington for 17 years; moderator of Mount Anthony Union High School and Bennington School District for 20 years; and served as selectman for the Town of Bennington for 10 years.
He was a member of Mount Anthony Lodge No. 13 F&AM, Cairo Temple of Shriners, the Bennington Rotary Club and helped establish and provide leadership for the interact program at Mount Anthony Union High School.
He was an avid New York Yankees fan and he sponsored a local softball team that went on to win the Class A Vermont State championship.He enjoyed collecting watches.
In 2004, Mr. Santarcangelo received a concurrent resolution from the State of Vermont House of Representatives honoring him for his lifetime of local and state public service.
