   David Saniter , emergency programs manager for Lee County , said if people are asked to leave their homes , they should make their way to major roadways like U.S. 41 , Interstate 75 and State Roads 80 , 82 and 31.
   
   If you can get to U.S. 41 , that's good. If you can get to I-75 , that's better , he said.
   
   Saniter said the highway's elevation is 12 to 14 feet above sea level while the interstate lies about 25 feet above sea level.
   
   While Lee County roads are often crowded under ordinary conditions , Saniter said it's hard to guess the ease or difficulty of a storm evacuation. In any storm , Saniter said , those on barrier islands and in mobile homes will be given a heads-up on the possibility of evacuation.
   
   One advantage hurricanes have over other forms of bad weather is advance notice of their approach , he said. And many people are often willing to leave their homes early if need be.
   
   People do not wait for us to blow the whistle , Saniter said. ( Hurricanes ) are not like a tornado. You have time ( to evacuate ) but some people wait and wait and wait..
   
   Lee County has been spared from a major storm's touch since Hurricane Donna struck in 1960. Saniter said that fact has produced few evacuations in the area. But he said island residents were asked to leave their homes last year because of the effects from Hurricane Gordon and Hurricane Debby , which skirted but did not strike Lee County.
   
   We do give time ( to evacuate ) and sometimes people try to wait it out , Saniter said. We can only do our best and hope they get out..

   Lee County Emergency Management Director David Saniter said the county has a clause in all its road contracts that requires the building contractor to secure sites when an evacuation order is given.
   
   The goal is to secure the roads as quickly as possible and the contractors know what they're supposed to do if an evacuation order is given , Saniter said.
   
   The work is not hard to do because the majority of lanes on a road under construction are still open while work goes on , he said.
