Despite evening showers, the free festival attracted about 3,000 people Saturday, said Rick Sanchez, Texas Jazz Festival Society president.
"Performers love this area," Sanchez said."They come from everywhere because we have friendly people and a great ambiance. There's no hustle and bustle."

This year's festival did encounter some obstacles, Sanchez said
"After Sept. 11 it seemed that the country was very patriotic, but we had trouble getting corporate sponsors," Sanchez said."But it worked out when it was all over."
Sanchez said all of his and the other volunteers' work becomes fulfilling during the evening when the festival is in full swing.
"On Saturday at 9 p.m. I'll stand out on the front porch looking at the crowd and the bands," Sanchez said."None of these people would be here if it was not for the work of the volunteers and or planning. We are one big family. We love jazz and we work to perpetuate the only true American music form."
