"It's nice to know that we are being recognized for our growth throughout the country," Dr. Richard Sanchez, college district president said Thursday."But most importantly, it attests to the programs the college offers, the ambiance we are able to create here, and the 'customer service attitude' the college is able to extend."

Navarro College has placed among the top 50 in several recent years in the Community College Weekly's rankings, coming in 12th in 2006, 28th in 2005, and 20th in 2004 and 10th in the 2003 rankings for growth in it's enrollment range of 5,000 to 9,999 students.

"I'm very pleased that the students are able to find what they're looking for here," Sanchez said."I've said for a long time that Navarro College is the college of choice for many students."

Sanchez attributed Navarro's growth to what he termed "a very deliberate, aggressive enrollment management plan."That plan includes outreach efforts by recruiters throughout the state, hosting tours of the Navarro campuses for high school students, presentations to high schools, and, now, use of the college's Web site.

"We use a program called 'Hobson' ... it is a system where students can access the page ... takes them through a series of steps ... it generates information for the students about the enrollment process," Sanchez explained. He said the college was always looking for ways to enhance its growth.

EXPO: NC's Sanchez offers advice at honor student breakfast
    ...
Dr. Richard Sanchez, president of Navarro College, offered the advice of a lifetime's experience Wednesday when he addressed the honors students of the Navarro County Youth Expo.

When he graduated from high school, his plan was to go to work in the local lumber mill, he told the students.

"My parents didn't focus on education," he said. "We never had a book in the house."

His plan to become a lumber grader was sidetracked because he listened to the woman who would become his wife, who advised him to go to college.

"I said 'I'm just not smart enough,'" he told her.

She corrected him, and urged him to become a teacher.

"The best quality of a leader is listen to what people say," he advised the students.

Sanchez predicted that the students in the honors group would be future leaders, and he offered them some advice on how to be good leaders, including seeking results, creating a vision, taking charge of things, loyalty, consistency, and acting responsibly.

"Don't hold grudges," he said. "Don't lead through intimidation."

Finally, he urged them to maintain a spiritual dimension. Even though Navarro College is a public college, Sanchez said he still gives the college's glory to God, he said.

"You, as leaders, have to have a spiritual dimension," he said.

"It was very competitive," said Dr. Richard Sanchez, college district president.

"We're sharing that with North Central Texas College," Sanchez explained of the award."It was a joint grant we did with them, because they have an oil and gas technology program as well. We'll split it right down the middle."

Sanchez said the funds will be used exclusively for the new oil and gas program at Navarro, a partnership between the college, XTO Energy and Encana Oil.The grant will go toward paying for instructors, program materials and equipment, he said.

That's the word from Dr. Richard Sanchez, Navarro College district president, who gave the college's board of trustees an update at the May board meeting Thursday.

The college is expected to receive an appropriation of $30,316,596 over the two-year state budget, up just over $6 million from the previous biennum, a 25 percent increase in state funding.

"That is due to our increases in contact hours," explained Sanchez. "The only way we can increase our revenues is to raise taxes, and we don't want to do that, or raise our tuition and fees, and we don't want to do that.

"I have an excellent staff that has continued to grow our contact hours," Sanchez said, resulting in the increased state funding.

Sanchez then told the board, jokingly, "and in the new budget, I've already spent it," bringing laughter from the trustees. Trustees will get their first look at the proposed college budget for the coming year in July.

Sanchez also advised the board he was concerned there could be some "bad news" coming from Austin in possible legislation that would allow a person with a concealed handgun license to carry a concealed weapon on a college campus. The Texas House failed to pass the measure, but the Texas Senate did, and sent their measure back over to the House, where Sanchez says he hopes it will "die."

"It appears they won't have time (to consider it) and I hope they don't," Sanchez said.

Enrollment at the campus and its one building is now at 1,000, Dr. Richard Sanchez reported. The building was designed to hold 800 students. Sanchez said the college would like to begin construction this fall, with the new building available by Fall 2010. Sanchez said the addition should accommodate the college's needs for space at Midlothian until 2014 or 2015.

Newly trained registered nurses can earn as much as $66,000 a year, according to Richard Sanchez, district president of Navarro College in Corsicana, Tex. "It's one of our most lucrative fields," he says. "Our programs are at their maximum capacity. Sanchez adds that every time he holds an open house for the nursing program, more than 100 students apply for about 30 to 40 slots.
