The symposium begins a safety campaign that extends through October 2006 during School Bus Safety Week.Some of the issues covered in the August 1st seminar will include: publicizing the safety campaign throughout the community; school bus drivers' observations pertaining to San Marcos drivers, frequent offenders, and problematic locations; securing the input and support of local law enforcement agencies and governmental agencies; and tracking and data collection for statistical reports.

Sanchez says that, according to the National Safety Council, school buses are the safest form of ground transportation, "40 times safer than the family car."In spite of this, in an average year about 25 school children across the nation are killed in school bus accidents."One-third of these are struck by motorists who fail to stop for the school bus," Sanchez quotes.

He provides this brief synopsis:
