The subdivision's soil was not tested because it is unlikely the chemicals would have spread that far, said Jerry Samford, an environmental compliance specialist with the law firm Troutman Sanders, who was hired by Avionics.He said the tests on the company's property showed the chemicals present about 30 feet underground.Avionics decided to do the testing at the homes closest to the business immediately for "peace of mind."

"It would take weeks to check the bedrock," Samford said about the company's property.

"We're trying to be out in front to the extent that we haven't gotten all of the details worked out," Samford said.

Jerry Samford, an environmental compliance specialist with the law firm Troutman Sanders who was hired by Avionics Specialties, said PERC was found in the well of the homeowner closest to the plant.The chemical was present in 6.5 parts per billion, slightly above the 5 parts per billion drinking standard set by the Environmental Protection Agency.

PERC is considered a carcinogen and can be dangerous if ingested over decades.Samford said the homes in Walnut Hills are less than 10 years old; no homes were previously built on the land.

The degreaser may have leaked from a concrete tank that Avionics had removed from a chemical storage pad on its property.It was not immediately known when the leak occurred.Samford said Avionics would continue to have soil testing done on its site and the surrounding area to determine how far the chemical went from the plant.
