    Greg Samford, the Chairman of Deacons and a lifelong member of First Baptist said he was delighted to have Rev. Glass back in the church.

    Samford was baptized by Glass in 1967 at the age of 10.

    Greg Samford, chairman of deacons for the church, said he got the idea in Fall 2001, while browsing online for ways to witness to people on the streets.

    "We tried it last year, and had about 50 people," he said."We decided to make it an annual thing.A lot of people came up and said they'd never have gotten to see the game otherwise.I didn't even think of it like that, but a lot of these people don't have the opportunity to watch sports on a regular basis."

    A scholarship benefiting graduates of Galveston Ball High School has been established through the Stephen F. Austin State University Alumni Association with a $10,000 gift from Galveston resident Greg Samford.

    The scholarship will be known as the Greg Samford Scholarship.

    Samford is the son of Betty and the late Mauryce Samford of Galveston.He graduated from Galveston Ball High School in 1975 and received a bachelor's degree and master's degree in education from SFA in 1980 and 1982, respectively.

    During his time at SFA, Samford was active in Pi Kappa Alpha, the Baptist Student Union and the Student Government Association.Samford also worked in the university's intramural department.

    After graduating, Samford returned to Galveston and began work with the University of Texas Medical Branch.He has spent 19 years with the institution and has served 12 of those years as a systems analyst in the clinical information services.

    Samford is active in the First Baptist Church of Galveston where he teaches Sunday school, serves as a deacon and as director of the Baptist Men.He also is a member of the Pachyderm Club, the Gulf Coast Volleyball Officials, the Galveston Umpires Association and the Board of Directors of the Texas Baptist Encampment.A member of the Kiwanis Club of Galveston, Samford will serve the 2001-2002 year as lieutenant governor for the organization's Division 28.
