Kurt Salzinger Appointed as New APA Executive Director for Science.The Science Directorate is pleased to welcome Kurt Salzinger as its new Executive Director , as of August 15 , 2001.Salzinger succeeds Richard McCarty , who left APA in June to become Dean of Arts and Sciences at Vanderbilt University in Nashville , Tennessee.

Salzinger comes to APA from Hofstra University in Hempstead , New York , where he taught as professor of psychology and directed the PhD program in combined clinical and school psychology since 1992.Not a new face at APA , Salzinger has been active in the organization's governance and divisions for many years.He served on APA's Council of Representatives for two terms ( 1989-91 and 1991-93 ) and was a member of the Board of Directors from 1993-96.He chaired the Board of Scientific Affairs ( BSA ) from 1988-89 and was a BSA member for two terms ( 1986-88 and 1996-98 ).He is currently serving on APA's Policy and Planning Board.In addition , Salzinger has been president of Divisons 1 ( General ) and 25 ( Behavior Analysis ) and is a fellow of Divisions 1 , 3 ( Experimental ) , 9 ( Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues ) , 12 ( Clinical ) , 25 , and 52 ( International ).

Salzinger earned his PhD from Columbia University in 1954.His research has covered a wide variety of topics , ranging from the effects of electromagnetic fields on the behavior of rats exposed in utero , to the communication patterns between pilots and traffic controllers before accidents and near-accidents.He has worked with both normal and abnormal children and adults in areas such as verbal behavior , conditioning , circadian rhythms , memory , and psychophysics.He is a prolific author , having written 12 books , 36 chapters , and more than 100 papers and articles.

Salzinger has held leadership positions in numerous other scientific organizations , including the New York Academy of Sciences , the American Institute of Science and Technology , the New York Science Policy Association , and the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies.He previously worked as a program officer at the National Science Foundation and principal research scientist at the New York State Psychiatric Institute.
Salzinger plans to continue many of the ongoing activities of the Science Directorate , and he also hopes to promote APA membership to scientists who are not currently involved with the association and to make APA more visible to nonpsychologists.Merry Bullock , APA's Associate Executive Director for Science , summarized the feelings of the Science Directorate staff when she said , we are very fortunate to have won Kurt Salzinger as Executive Director.His long-time involvement in APA and Science Directorate activities and his standing in the broader scientific and academic communities will support our development of cutting-edge programs to support psychological science..•.
